Course Three

Trauma in the Backcountry

0.5 CEU - $150

Learn backcountry patient care and management techniques. Topic areas include spinal, neck, head, chest wall, lung, abdominal, pelvic, and extremity injuries, as well as, hemorrhage and shock.

This self-paced, 5-hour online course is approved for 0.5 PT CEUs. Upon completion, you have the option to take additional Wilderness Physical Therapy Educators courses that lead to certification as a Wilderness PT First Responder.

Course Topics

  • Head and Face Injuries

    Learn the clinical presentation of and treatment approaches for skill and facial fractures, brain trauma, tooth loss, bleeding and injuries to ear, eye, and orbit.

  • Hemorrhage

    Identify different types of hemorrhage and learn unique considerations for controling external bleeding.

  • Spine and Neck Injuries

    Discuss the mechanisms of injury, key concerns on examination, and immediate treatment approaches for injuries to the spine. Identify optimal ways to achieve spinal cord protection in the wilderness environment. And, list the cervical-spine guidelines and NEXUS criteria.

  • Chest Wall and Lung Injuries

    Describe the mechanisms of injury, examination, and field treatment approaches for injuries to the chest.

  • Abdominal and Pelvic Injuries

    Learn the mechanisms of injury, key concerns for examination and treatment associated with injuries to the abdominal wall, peritoneal and retro-peritoneal area,

  • Shock

    Discuss the four clinical presentations of shock and develop treatment plans for people in various degrees of shock.

  • Injuries to Extremities

    Learn the key mechanisms of extremity injuries. Identify the key points of an evaluation for an injured extremity. Discuss treatment options for injured extremities. Identify techniques for reduction, splinting and slinging for extremity fractures.
